Write a short priority list
Choose the two or three things that matter most for the visit. Perhaps the bathrooms need extra attention, the spare room can wait, or you would like the kitchen finished before you return.
Tell the team about unusual surfaces, existing damage and any products that must not be used. If you want a task outside the original scope, ask before the appointment so the time and price can be checked.
Clear enough space to work
This is preparation, not a requirement to make the property spotless. If tidying or decluttering is part of what you need, explain that when booking. It takes time and may change what can be cleaned during the visit.
- Move clothes, toys and loose items from floors where possible.
- Clear the main surfaces you want wiped, without moving heavy furniture.
- Put private paperwork, money and valuable or fragile items somewhere safe.
- Empty a cupboard or appliance only if cleaning its interior has been agreed.
Make access straightforward
Confirm the building entrance, flat number, intercom, key arrangements and a contact number. Mention parking restrictions, loading access, lifts and any building rules that apply to visiting contractors.
Working water and electricity are needed for many cleaning tasks. For an empty property, check that these are available and that the team can lock up afterwards. Avoid putting alarm codes or other sensitive access details in an open enquiry; agree secure arrangements directly with the team.
Plan around pets and people at home
Let the team know about pets before the visit. Arrange a comfortable, secure space for them if noise, unfamiliar visitors or open doors might cause a problem.
If you work from home, agree which room you will use and when it can be cleaned. A simple room order can reduce interruptions. Keep children and pets away from wet floors and cleaning products during the work.
Make the last few minutes useful
If you are available, walk through the agreed priorities with the cleaner. If you are away, agree how feedback will be shared. Be specific about anything you would like handled differently next time.
For a recurring service, a stable routine helps: the same access arrangements, a clear task list and notice of any changes. HCME will confirm the scope and arrangements with you before the booking.
