The first few minutes after a spill
Move furniture or bags away from the wet patch. If there are solids, lift them gently with a spoon or blunt edge, taking care not to push them further into the pile.
For liquid, press a plain white absorbent cloth onto the spill. Use a fresh part of the cloth as it becomes wet. Work from the edge towards the middle so the affected area stays as small as possible. Stop if the carpet colour begins to transfer.
Know what you are cleaning
A stain on a synthetic bedroom carpet is not necessarily treated in the same way as one on wool, viscose or a delicate rug. Check the manufacturer’s label, care guide or installation paperwork. The stain matters too: note what was spilled and whether any products have already been used.
If you cannot identify the material, do not experiment with a series of household mixtures. Photograph the area in daylight and ask a carpet-care specialist which treatment is suitable.
Coffee, food, mud and ink need different decisions
- Coffee or tea: absorb the liquid promptly, then follow the carpet manufacturer’s spot-cleaning guidance. Mention milk or sugar when asking for advice.
- Food: remove loose material first. Use only a product approved for the carpet and the particular stain, following its instructions.
- Mud: avoid spreading it with a wet cloth. Follow the carpet’s guidance for removing dried dirt and vacuuming.
- Ink, paint or nail varnish: do not apply random solvents. Keep the product packaging and ask for specialist advice before treating the mark.
Three common mistakes
- Scrubbing: this spreads the mark and can distort the carpet pile.
- Soaking: excess liquid can reach the backing and leave a patch that is slow to dry.
- Using washing-up liquid or general household cleaners: these may be unsuitable for the fibre and leave residue. Wool carpets need particular care; use a suitable approved product.
When to ask for help
Seek advice for a large spill, a delicate or valuable rug, a recurring mark, or a stain left by an unknown substance. A visible mark is not always removable, and no cleaning method can reverse every type of damage.
When enquiring, include the carpet material if known, the age and size of the stain, what caused it, and every treatment already attempted. Confirm whether specialist carpet cleaning is included in your booking; a routine vacuum is a different service.
